When I saw Built to Spill in Chapel Hill, N.C., I had the flu, and a rock concert probably was the last place I wanted to be. Still, that was one of the best shows I ever have been to. If I wasn't so sick, it could very well have been the best.
For whatever reason, many live albums don't do their respective bands justice. Well, this live Built to Spill album isn't one of those albums
Although this album is almost 72 minutes long, it only has nine songs. Doug Martsch and BTS are well known for their long-ass guitar solos, and, thus, many of their songs far exceed their normal lengths. But fear not: The songs of BTS, however great they sound on record, sound so much better live. Besides, BTS makes those long guitar solos sound cool.
My only complaint is that many of my favorite BTS songs were not included. I'm thinking that a double album should have been released.
Check out the cover of "Virginia Reel Around the Fountain," originally done by the Halo Benders, Doug's other band, and covers of a Love as Laughter song and Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" (20 1/2 minutes!).
If you're a fan of Built to Spill but never has seen it before, you'll understand why it's not only one of the best bands but also one of the best live bands as well. You will love this and crave for more.
