Before Richard Davies teamed up with Eric Matthews to form the tragic, orchestral-pop band Cardinal, he played in an acclaimed Sydney, Australia, band called The Moles. So yeah, these are them.
Untune the Sky collects the band's 1992 release of the same name, plus the band's What's the New Mary Jane?EP (title culled from famed Beatles session) and dumps them stateside for the first time.
The moodiness that supposedly broke up Cardinal has a field day with most of these tracks, which range from the tinny, Flying Nun Recors-esque "Bury Me Happy" to the quirky psych-anthem "Saint Jack" to the truly bizarre "Nailing Jesus to the Cross." Although Davies' quirky lyrics and quirkier-still arrangements recall a guy with the same last name in a little band called The Kinks, his fuzzy-guitar penchant hints of a psychedelic sweet tooth. Check out the aboutface intro to "What's the New Mary Jane?" for a synopsis of the proceedings.
