Although I've never owned any of the Reverend's records, I have been a fan since I caught his band's live act for the first time in either 1996 or '97. I have seen the band three times, and it always put on a very entertaining live show, with the drummer tossing his drumsticks up in the air and not missing a beat, Jimbo twirling and tossing his upright bass and the Reverend smiling and playing some mean guitar licks.
Well, the band is back with a new label and is better than ever. The Reverend and Co. has been known as a "psychobilly" band, but each of the times I have seen them it had become more psycho with less emphasis on the rockabilly.
With Spend the Night in the Box, it seemed to have made a conscious effort to put more focus on the rockabilly element. Spend the Night in the Boxeven has an alt-country song. As a result, the Reverend's music is a lot more enjoyable, whereas the band's past couple albums haven't been as fun to listen to on record as they were live. The songs on this record sound as if they will make for an even better live performance than the band put forth the three times I saw it before. All the songs are good, and they make me want to grease my hair up and act like the Fonz. Aaaayy!!!
